Tech jobs make SA’s critical skills list

Date:4 August 2022

The critical skills list for South Africa now includes tech occupations.

The update to South Africa’s Critical Skills List for 2022, published by Home Affairs, lists the skills that are in high demand and emphasises the occupations that are eligible for South African key skills work visas, making it a crucial tool for regional companies – only those with credentials or skills deemed essential for the nation are given such visas.

It is becoming more and more important to draw skilled individuals to South Africa as the nation is losing a sizable number of trained professionals to emigration.

South Africa’s work visa system was updated by President Cyril Ramaphosa during his 2022 State of the Nation speech on February 10, 2022.

He claimed that the procedure for issuing work visas had been thoroughly examined by the government, under the direction of former director-general of Home Affairs Mavuso Msimang. This study is investigating the potential for additional visa categories that could support economic growth, such as a start-up visa and a remote working visa.

The updated list’s newly included abilities mostly pertain to specialized medical and health professionals. It did, however, include a few more technical requirements, such as expertise in electronic engineering and engineering management, according to mybroadband.co.za.

Only one of the published list’s important abilities requires an intermediate certificate, while the majority of them need a bachelor’s degree or higher.

The table below provides a summary of the list of essential technological abilities.
