A French company are making all our retro dreams come true with their reimagined walkman and cassette tape combination.

According to Forbes, magnetics company Mulann, have said they have had an increase in interest in their analog cassette tapes since 2016, when they opened their subsidiary company specifically for this purpose. While digital overtook analogue in the 2000s, they say that now analogue will complement digital.

“It’s like heating. In your home, you have heaters in every room–high numbers–and that’s not going to change. That’s digital. But you can also have a single fireplace, and it takes time to experience something different–this is analogue. The fireplace isn’t going to replace your heaters and the heaters won’t forever kill the fireplace,” Jean-Luc Renou, CEO of Mulann group told Forbes.

Now, the company will launch a portable cassette player for their tapes which will retail at $76 (around R1,000). They have worked with sound engineers to ensure crisp sound and want to incorporate bluetooth connectivity and recharge capability in the new prototype.

This renewed interest in cassettes mirrors the resurgence of vinyl in 2015, with artists releasing their new records on vinyl for the first time in years. Prepare to see eclectic cassette piles in all the homes of those who consider themselves the coolest.
