Whatsapp and Facebook group admins will be held accountable if sales of illegal cigarettes and alcohol are made on the platform.

Megan Harrington-Johnson, managing partner at HJW spoke to Jacaranda FM and explained while people may not agree with the bans, they are the law.

If the law is broken, there will be repercussions.

People have been advertising alcohol and cigarette sales across these social media platforms, which is in direct contravention of the law.

Harrington-Johnson explained that all it takes is for someone to send a screenshot of these messages to local police.

Since the banning of alcohol and cigarettes, a growing black market has emerged. According to My Broadband, SARS Commissioner Edward Kieswetter stated that the total loss of tax revenue in April from alcohol sales amounts to roughly R1.5 billion.
