Cheetah Robot runs 45,5 km/h – a bit faster than Usain Bolt

Date:7 September 2012 Tags:, , , , ,

Cheetah is a fast-running quadruped robot developed by Boston Dynamics with funding from DARPA. It blazed past its previous speed record to achieve a phenomenal 45,5 km/h, about 0,8 km/h faster than Usain Bolt’s fastest 20-metre sprint.

The current version of Cheetah runs on a high-speed treadmill in the laboratory where it is powered by an off-board hydraulic pump and uses a boom-like device to keep it running in the centre of the treadmill. Testing on an untethered outdoor version starts early next year.
