Creating Synthetic Life

Date:10 June 2010 Tags:,

As we’ve already informed you, world-renowned scientist Dr J Craig Venter and his team at the J Craig Venter Institute (JCVI) have become the first in history to synthetically create a living, self-replicating cell.

Now, Discovery World is bringing viewers inside Dr Venter’s pioneering quest to produce life synthetically in CREATING SYNTHETIC LIFE, premiering Saturday, 12 June, at 21:55 on Discovery World (DStv channel 250).

Over the course of five years, only Discovery World cameras captured the failures, successes and breakthrough moments of Dr Venter, Nobel Laureate Hamilton Smith, Dr Clyde Hutchison and JCVI researchers as they meticulously sought to create a synthetic single-celled organism.

What exactly does this news mean for the human race? Where exactly will it take us? Could the technology be used for negative purposes? What are the ethical concerns we must weigh before using it? These are some of the questions raised by CREATING SYNTHETIC LIFE.

In the meantime, watch this video to listen to what Dr Venter has to say about synthetic genomics
