Introducing X3, the world’s fastest helicopter

Date:25 October 2013 Tags:, ,

Flying over the south of France in June, Eurocopter’s X3 helicopter hit 471 km/h, breaking the level-flight speed record, set in 2010, by 10 km/h. The X3 has the speed of a turboprop aircraft with a helicopter’s vertical takeoff and landing ability. Two oversize Rolls-Royce Turbomeca RTM322 turboshaft engines each produce 1 693 shaft kilowatts; two short-span fixed wings and propellers supplement the five-blade main rotor up top. Eurocopter plans to use the X3’s technology in helicopters designed for search-and-rescue, military troop transport, and possibly even intercity shuttle service.
