An Italian pianist performed an original composition on a grand piano while floating on a in the Arctic.

The performance of “Elegy for the Arctic” by renowned pianist and composer Ludovico Einaudi forms part of an effort by Greenpeace Spain to have the unique and fast-disappearing Arctic classified as a sanctuary. This week the OSPAR commission tasked with protecting the North-East Atlantic will meet and make a decision around granting the Arctic sanctuary status.

To facilitate this unique concert the agency constructed a massive artificial floating ice platform. The platform measures at 2,6 metres in length and 10 metres in width and is made of more than 300 wooden triangles attached together. This sheer size is to accommodate the weight of a grand piano.

“Being here has been a great experience. I could see the purity and fragility of this area with my own eyes and interpret a song I wrote to be played upon the best stage in the world. It is important that we understand the importance of the Arctic, stop the process of destruction and protect it,” said Einaudi.
