Rubbee enables you to convert your bicycle to electric drive

Date:17 December 2013 Tags:, ,

Many kinds of friction drives for bicycles have made their appearance over the years, but none is quite like the Rubbee. Its waterproof casing is machined from aircraft-grade aluminium and the friction wheels uses a state-of-the-art polyurethane compound to maximise durability and minimise wear on your bicycle’s tyre.

Controlled by a handlebar-mounted throttle, it delivers a top speed of 25 km/h and has a useful range of about 25 km, making it ideal for daily commuting. An integrated battery management system ensures that the battery pack is good for thousands of cycles. The Rubbee module – which clamps to the seat post with a quick-release lever – can be attached or detached in a matter of seconds. An arm (acting much like a shock absorber) keeps the roller pressed against the tyre to achieve a good grip without causing excessive wear – a bugbear of lesser friction drives. If you prefer to ride your bike without help, simply flip it up to separate the roller from the tyre. Price: about R12 000.
