There’s something about it

If the 2014 Star Bolt looks familiar, it’s because this all-new cruiser bears more than a passing resemblance to Harley-Davidson’s Sportster Iron 883. The Bolt, built by Yamaha’s cruiser-focused sub-brand, serves up supreme rideability. Its air-cooled 942-cm3 V-twin hums along nicely with a soulful exhaust bark and reasonably gutsy throttle twist, and the suspension and low-slung saddle are less punishing than one might expect given the minimalist construction and 69-cm height. The R-Spec version gets remote-reservoir rear shocks, a suede-like seat material, blacked-out mirrors and special paint colours; the extra cost is money well spent. Both versions incorporate a sleek digital speedometer and modern details such as an angular air box and matte black exhaust pipes. Lean, clean, and armed with trick styling details for more contemporary sensibilities, Yamaha’s Bolt proves to be a compelling alternative to Harley’s Sportster. – Basem Wasaf
