They’re calling it the most efficient and safest S-Class ever. First, safety: among the features that boost this S-Class’s ratings are Active Blind Spot Assist and Active Lane Keeping Assist.

Second, and equally importantly, thanks to AdBlue emission control, the S350 BlueTEC is said to be one of the cleanest diesel models, bar none. The engine complies with the EU 6 standard, which comes into effect only in 2014. It’s economical, too, with combined fuel consumption of 6,8 litres/100 km. CO2 emissions are 177 g/km, and outputs are 190 kW and 620 N.m. However, to achieve these kinds of figures it has to be run exclusively on 50 ppm “green” diesel.

Still, it’s probably safe to say that almost as much attention will be focused on the new bespoke B&O AMG sound system (above, centre and right) now available on the S-Class. In total there are 15 loudspeakers and two amplifiers with a total output of 1 200 watts, with digital sound processing that allows endlessly customisable surround sound. Price: R1 034 880.
How it works: AdBlue. From a 25,7-litre tank under the boot floor, an aqueous urea solution is injected into the exhaust flow, releasing ammonia. This converts up to 80 per cent of nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen and water in the downstream SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) catalytic converter. Scheduled fluid top-ups take place at normal service intervals – about 20 000 kilometres.
