Audi A4 Avant
The sleek 2009 Audi A4 Avant has the chassis dynamics to knock most lumbering SUVs right into the weeds.
The A4 Avant has been one of our favourite wagons since it debuted in ’95, and this new one – loaded with fresh tech, higher levels of refinement and a crisp design – only reinforces the sentiment. The turbocharged 157 kW 2-litre direct-injected Four produces an amazing 350 N.m of torque from just 1 500 r/min. Who needs the 3,2-litre V6? It actually makes less torque than this Four. The ride has calmed significantly from the previous version, and the structure feels sturdy. In fact, the tranquil fashion in which this car makes its way down the road was a revelation, as was the negligible throughput of bump shock and steering tremor. This Lexus-like refinement is particularly noticeable on cars with the optional Audi Drive Select system. As fuel prices climb, the Avant might yet offer a compelling alternative to the ubiquitous crossover.
