A new 2,4-litre direct injection engine tops the list of tech upgrades for Hyundai’s refreshed Sonata.

The four-cylinder unit – mated with a 6-speed automatic transmission – develops 148 kW at 6 300 r/min. Its peak torque of 250 N.m is achieved at 2 4 250 r/min. This is 13 % up in power over the previous equivalent model, but 4 % down in fuel consumption; economy rating is 7,9 litres/100 km. According to Hyundai, the Sonata 2,4 GDI Elite reaches 100 km/h from standstill in 9 seconds.

A mild interior and exterior makeover is matched in the tech department by a new sound system with a touch-screen display in the centre console, park distance detectors in front as well as at the back, dual sunroof, powered heated seats, and auto-defog windscreen.

While retaining the existing running gear, Hyundai has introduced adaptive dampers that vary in stiffness or compliance depending on road conditions and dynamic requirements.
